About

Welcome!

Saint John’s is a congregation of warm and good-hearted Christians with a proud heritage dating back nearly 150 years. The church was recently dedicated as an official landmark in the Village of Lindenhurst, a thriving and vibrant community on the south shore of Long Island. Saint John’s 100-foot stained glass tower is a beacon of light and boasts beautiful sounding bells that can be heard miles away. The church members actively minister to the community through worship, music, a preschool educational program, a food pantry, and a thrift shop. We welcome all who wish to experience the presence of Christ.

Rev. Marc Herbst

Rev. Marc Herbst

Pastor

In January 2024, Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church called the Reverend Marc Herbst to serve as its Pastor. He had previously led congregations in Manhasset, Plainview, and Syosset, NY, as well as served as the Chief of Staff and Director of Strategic Plans for the Bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Pastor Marc enjoys leading worship, where he provides sermons that convey the lessons and teachings of the Lord with humor, compassion, and humility. His favorite preaching moments often occur during spontaneous dialogues with our youngsters during his children’s sermons. Additionally, our Pastor’s passion includes creative writing; he often shares his musings with church members. Beyond his spiritual leadership in Word and Sacrament, he is respected for his administrative management skills. Pastor Marc is also a regarded community leader, active in many charitable and civic efforts throughout the region.

A lifelong learner, his educational training includes doctoral studies in Biblical Preaching and a Master of Divinity degree. While working full-time, Herbst traveled extensively to fulfill his theological education, taking coursework in Albany and Rochester, NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, France, Germany, and Switzerland. His Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) included serving as a chaplain at Albany Medical Center, primarily in the hospital’s Emergency Department and Prison Ward.

A native Long Islander, Rev. Herbst and his wife Carol are the proud parents of three adult daughters and grandparents of five grandchildren.
