Advent Joy vs. Christmas Blues

by | Dec 12, 2024

Admit it—this season can feel like a battle. For many of us, the struggle is real. The days leading up to Christmas often bring mixed emotions, and acknowledging that tension can help us navigate those challenges with greater hope and grace.

This week, the Christian community celebrates the Third Sunday of Advent, a time when we pause to focus on joy. Advent, the season of waiting and preparation for Christmas, is meant to fill our hearts with hope, peace, and joy this Sunday in particular. To mark the occasion, many congregations light a pink candle—often called the “Shepherd’s Candle”—symbolizing the joyous proclamation of the angel to the shepherds in the fields: “I bring you good news of great joy for all people.”

Yet for many, joy can feel elusive during this season. The holidays are often painted as a time of happiness and celebration, but for some, they bring feelings of anxiety, loneliness, or sadness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reminds us that those already managing mental health challenges may find this time of year especially difficult, with more than 60% reporting a worsening of their symptoms.

There are many reasons why this season can feel overwhelming. Hectic schedules disrupt our rest. Holiday gatherings tempt us to overindulge. Financial pressures mount as we shop for gifts. Loneliness may creep in, especially if we’re separated from loved ones by distance or loss. And the weight of unrealistic expectations—trying to sustain constant happiness—can leave us feeling empty.

If you’re struggling with holiday blues instead of embracing the joy this season promises, we invite you to remember the true reason for Christmas. Let Christ’s love fill your heart. Consider this an opportunity to reconnect with the hope and joy that only He can bring.

If you haven’t worshiped in a while—or even if you have—this could be the perfect time to join us and rediscover the joy of Christ. Shake off the holiday blues and celebrate with us through Word and music, sharing in the gift of God’s love.

We’d love to welcome you to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 36 E. John Street, Lindenhurst. Join us this Sunday, December 15, at 9:30 AM, and again next Sunday at 9:30 AM. We’ll also gather for Christmas Eve services at 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and on Christmas Day at 9:30 AM. Come experience the season’s joy—let it fill your heart and lift your spirit!

Blessings,
Pastor Marc
