As Long Islanders, surrounded by water, we are accustomed to hearing nautical expressions. But did you know that one of our most familiar sayings has deep maritime roots? The phrase “all hands on deck” originated aboard sailing ships, where every sailor, or “hand,” was summoned to the deck whenever extra help was urgently needed.
Long before Jones Beach became a beloved summer destination, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound were home to a thriving whaling industry. Major Thomas Jones, for whom Jones Beach State Park is named, and his contemporaries operated whaling stations in Cold Spring Harbor, Sag Harbor, and other Long Island ports. When a whale was brought alongside a vessel, every available crew member was called on deck to help process the enormous catch. It was demanding work that required everyone pulling together.
Eventually, “all hands on deck” became a familiar rallying cry whenever people needed to unite to accomplish an important task. We still use the expression today whenever everyone is needed to lend a hand.
This coming Sunday, July 26, we are issuing our own “all hands on deck” call. No, you won’t be boarding a boat at Venetian Shores or setting sail across the Great South Bay. Instead, we invite you to help prepare for a very special outdoor worship service at 9:30 AM that will include the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.
We could use your helping hands! Before worship, we’ll need assistance moving our baptismal font, paschal candle, altar furnishings, and folding chairs outdoors. If you’re willing to help, please arrive around 8:30 AM.
Every sailor understands the power of water. This Sunday, we will celebrate an even greater miracle as God uses ordinary water and His extraordinary Word to welcome Callahan Alexandra Bopp into His family through Holy Baptism.
So, respond to the call for “all hands on deck!” Come lend a hand, celebrate this joyous occasion, and welcome our newest sister in Christ. I promise… you’ll have a whale of a time!
Blessings,
Pastor Marc
