An August Occasion

by | Aug 28, 2025

The prefix “aug” comes from the Latin augere, meaning “to increase” or “to grow.” From this little root, we get words like “auction” (where prices increase), “augment” (to add to or grow), and even this month’s name—August. In 8 BC, the Roman Senate renamed the month to honor Emperor Augustus Caesar. What an august honor indeed! The trend of renaming months after emperors began a year earlier, when July was dedicated to Julius Caesar.

Today, August 28, is another august occasion: Happy St. Augustine Day! On this day the church commemorates Augustine, Bishop of Hippo (354–430). Augustine was one of the most influential theologians of the early church. His writings profoundly shaped Christian thought on the themes of grace, faith, and the nature of God. The Order of Augustinians was later founded in his honor, and its members still follow a spiritual rule based on his teachings.

For many faiths, Interest in Augustine has recently been augmented with the election of Pope Leo XIV, a member of the Augustinian Order. For Lutherans in particular, Augustine plays a central role in our heritage. Martin Luther began his spiritual journey as an Augustinian monk, and many Lutheran teachings were augmented—and sometimes augured—by Augustine’s thought.

This Sunday, August 31, at 9:30 AM, we invite you to augment your spiritual practice by joining us for our outdoor worship service (weather permitting). On this last day of August, may we continue to augment our faith and augment our fellowship as we gather in Christ’s name.

Blessings,

Pastor Marc
