Faithful Fathers

by | Jun 12, 2025

Last month, history was made when Robert Francis Prevost—born and raised in Chicago—became the first American elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Now known as Pope Leo XIV, his election has sparked headlines and curiosity, especially among those of us from other Christian traditions. What might this new leadership mean for our Catholic neighbors? And what does it mean that he’s an Augustinian?

This evening, Thursday, June 12, at 7:00 PM, we invite you to join us for a special Theology & Thoughts session titled “The Augustinians: From Saint Augustine to Reformer Martin Luther to Pope Leo XIV.” We’ll explore the influence of the Augustinian order—not only on Catholic spirituality but also on the Lutheran Reformation. After all, Martin Luther himself was an Augustinian monk, and Pope Leo XIV now follows in that same monastic lineage. We’ll look at the surprising historical intersections between Catholics and Lutherans that continue to shape Christian thought today.

And speaking of popes… why is the pope called the “Holy Father”? The title “pope” comes from the Latin papa, meaning “father.” In early Christianity, it was used for bishops, especially the Bishop of Rome. Over time, it became a title unique to the leader of the Roman Church. In Lutheran churches, we typically reserve the term “Father” for God alone. Still, we recognize that titles like these reflect roles of pastoral care—even if our traditions interpret them differently.

This Sunday, we turn our hearts to the First Father—the source of all life and love—as we celebrate Holy Trinity Sunday. It’s also Father’s Day when we give thanks to our dads and those who have nurtured us in faith.

Join us this Sunday, June 15, at 9:30 AM for worship with Holy Communion (please see the attached worship bulletin). Come celebrate the faith of our fathers—both here on earth and in heaven above.

Blessings,

Pastor Marc
