Happy Boxing Day

by | Dec 26, 2024

Merry Christmas! By the time you read this, the wrapping paper may be tidily recycled (or still scattered about the living room!), leftovers might be transforming into creative meals, and we all may be settling into the joyfully chaotic aftermath of Christmas Day. But did you know there’s another holiday that follows right on its heels? It’s called Boxing Day—a name that might conjure images of discarded gift boxes or even a spirited round of fisticuffs to claim the last cookie!

Boxing Day, celebrated today, December 26th, originated in the United Kingdom. Historically, it was a time when the wealthy boxed up gifts or money to share with their household staff, the poor, or those in need. Churches also played a role, opening their alms boxes to distribute funds to the less fortunate. It’s a tradition that reflects the spirit of generosity and service that lies at the heart of our celebration of Christ’s birth.

As we continue to bask in the glow of the Christmas season, it’s worth remembering that Christmas is not a one-day affair. The season of Christmas extends through the Twelve Days, leading us all the way to the Epiphany on January 6th. These days invite us to linger in the wonder of the incarnation and to share the good news of great joy in small, meaningful ways.

So, amid the hustle of putting away decorations and returning to routines, let’s hold on to the spirit of giving and gratitude. Maybe this week is the perfect time to check in on a neighbor, offer a helping hand, or contribute to our church’s ongoing ministries.

I also invite you to join us this coming Sunday, December 29th, at 9:30 AM for our First Sunday of Christmas worship service. Together, we will lift our voices in celebration with Christmas lessons and carols, a beautiful way to keep the joy of this season alive and share in its blessings as a church family. The worship bulletin is attached.

May the light of Christ shine brightly in your hearts and homes throughout this holy season and always.

With Christmas blessings,

Pastor Marc
