The definition of a hat trick is three successes of the same kind, especially consecutive ones within a short period. In sports, particularly hockey, scoring three straight goals in the same game is a major feat. Soccer fans celebrate the same achievement with equal enthusiasm.
Interestingly, the term comes from an entirely different sport: cricket. In 1879, Australian bowler Fred Spofforth took three wickets in three consecutive deliveries against England. To honor this extraordinary performance, he was awarded a hat, which gave rise to the phrase “hat trick”.
As Christmas approaches, we look forward to a different kind of hat trick. Join us for a holy hat trick as St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrates the Incarnation of our Lord with three consecutive Christmastide worship services. Tip your hats and rejoice with us: We gather first on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, at 5:00 PM, then at 7:00 PM, and finally on Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25, at 9:30 AM.
As a bonus, we bask in the afterglow of the Holy Hat Trick and continue the celebration through the twelve days of Christmas. During the First Sunday of Christmas, on Sunday, December 28, at 9:30 AM, we will worship with lessons and carols. Please join us for our worship services.
A blessed and joyous Christmas to all!
Blessings,
Pastor Marc
