In just a few days—on May 7—the world’s attention will turn to a small chimney atop the Sistine Chapel. As the Roman Catholic Church gathers in conclave to elect the next pope, all eyes will be watching for that telltale puff of white smoke signaling a new leader has been chosen to succeed Pope Francis.
Now, while our Lutheran version isn’t quite as dramatic—or as televised—we’re beginning our own important process this week. On Friday, May 2, the Metropolitan New York Synod of the ELCA gathers in Melville for our annual assembly. Among the business on the agenda is the election of a new bishop to succeed Bishop Paul Egensteiner, who has chosen to return to parish ministry.
Unlike the Catholic conclave, there’s no need for secrecy or cardinals sequestered behind locked doors. Our bishop is elected by an ecclesiastical ballot during the synod assembly. The process begins with a wide-open nominating ballot and moves through multiple rounds, gradually narrowing the field. A supermajority is needed at first, with thresholds lowering over subsequent ballots until a new bishop is elected by majority vote.
This year’s assembly includes an especially joyful occasion for our St. John’s family: the Festival Eucharist and Setting Apart of Synod Deacons on Friday evening, May 2, at 7:00 PM. Our own Kerrianne Wilmer will be formally set apart for diaconal ministry. We warmly invite you to attend the service at the Melville Marriott, 1350 Walt Whitman Road, and celebrate this special milestone in Kerrianne’s journey of faith and service.
And while no smoke will rise from above our sanctuary on Sunday morning, May 5, we are confident the Holy Spirit will be moving among us as we celebrate another joyful moment: First Communion! Four young ladies—Brynn Giannetta, Chloe Meurer, Aria Sengiray, and Madelyn Spinelli—will receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time. Join us for worship at 9:30 AM as we support them in this important step in their faith journey.
May the Spirit guide all our leaders—and all of us—as we continue to grow in faith, hope, and love.
Easter Joy!
Pastor Marc
