Today, our nation remembers that on July 2, 1776, exactly 250 years ago, the Continental Congress voted to declare the colonies independent of British rule. We often celebrate July 4 as America’s birthday because that is the date printed on the Declaration of Independence and when copies were first distributed. But in many ways, the real decision was made two days earlier. So I think it is entirely appropriate to begin our nation’s 250th birthday celebration today. Happy Birthday, USA!
The number 250 made me wonder whether there might be a biblical connection. Since I was looking for numbers, where else would I turn but…the Book of Numbers?
That Old Testament book, part of the Torah and probably one of the least-read books of the Bible, gets its name from the census Moses conducts after the Israelites leave Egypt. The people are counted, organized, and prepared for their journey to the Promised Land. Unfortunately, that journey is also marked by repeated complaints, rebellion, and God’s remarkable patience.
One of those rebellions appears in Numbers 16. A Levite named Korah gathered 250 prominent Israelite leaders to challenge the authority God had given Moses and Aaron. The revolt ended in dramatic fashion, serving as one of Scripture’s clearest reminders that pride and rebellion against God ultimately lead to destruction.
This week, however, we commemorate a very different chapter in history. Two hundred fifty years ago, our nation’s founders sought liberty while appealing to “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” and affirming that our rights come from our Creator. The coincidence of the number 250 reminds us that numbers alone tell us very little. What matters is whether our lives, our decisions, and even our celebrations remain grounded in God’s wisdom and guided by His purposes.
As we celebrate our nation’s birthday, may we also thank God for the freedom to worship Him, the wisdom to seek His will, and the mercy that continues to lead His people through every generation.
Join us this Sunday, July 5, at 9:30 a.m. as we close our 250th anniversary celebration by gathering to worship the One who has faithfully led His people through every generation. A worship bulletin is attached.
Blessings,
Pastor Marc
