Over the Hump

by | Oct 10, 2024

Who remembers Joe the Camel, the cartoonish character who, for years, made smoking seem enticing to young people? He was, of course, a camel with a certain cool swagger, trying to sell cigarettes. Today, there’s another famous camel on the scene—one with an entirely different mission. The GEICO Camel has made Wednesdays a little more bearable as he strolls around an office, loudly reminding everyone that it’s “Hump Day!” These marketing campaigns make it clear: camels are more than just desert animals—they’ve become icons of perseverance and, oddly enough, a bit of humor.

In both cases, these marketing figures use the camel as a symbol to get us “over the hump.” Life is full of humps and bumps. We face them at work, at home, and even within ourselves. But what if, instead of just getting over the hump, we were challenged to get through a much tighter space—a metaphorical “eye of a needle”?

This coming Sunday, we will dive into one of Jesus’ most famous sayings: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” It’s an image that’s stuck with people for centuries and brings up all kinds of questions. Was Jesus talking about a literal camel and a sewing needle? Or was He referring to something even more challenging—our ability to let go of what holds us back? What does this say about rich people?

Join us this Sunday, October 13 th at 9:30 AM, as we explore what it means to be “over the hump” spiritually. Perhaps there’s a hump in your life that’s keeping you from experiencing God’s love and grace fully. Let’s tackle that challenge together and find the path that leads to life, even if it means passing through a narrow space.

Blessings,
Pastor Marc
