Toys for Tots

by | Jul 25, 2024

Giving is the epitome of the Christmas spirit, a sentiment beautifully captured by the inception and growth of the “Toys for Tots” program. Born from the compassionate heart of Diane Hendricks and the unwavering commitment of her husband, Major Bill Hendricks, this program stands as a testament to the profound impact of selfless kindness and community involvement. What started as a simple gesture of crafting a homemade doll has since transformed into a nationwide initiative that embodies a true desire of the holiday season – bringing joy to children who need it most.

In 1947, Diane Hendricks’ concern for children who would be devoid of Christmas gifts prompted her to take action. Her desire to spread happiness to less fortunate children sparked an idea – to craft and donate a homemade doll. When Major Bill Hendricks discovered there was no organization to undertake such an effort, his military discipline and dedication were tested. He heeded his wife’s compassionate directive and initiated the “Toys for Tots” program with the help of his fellow Marine Corps Reservists. The emerging program’s success was immediate and resounding, with more than 5,000 toys collected and distributed in the Los Angeles area within the first year.

The success of the initial toy drive inspired the expansion of “Toys for Tots” into a national program the following year. Major Bill Hendricks, leveraging his civilian role as the director of public relations at Warner Brothers Studios, used his industry connections to garner support from influential celebrities. Walt Disney designed the “Toys for Tots” logo, which remains iconic today. The involvement of well-known figures like Nat King Cole, Bob Hope, John Wayne, and Doris Day elevated the program’s visibility and reach, drawing widespread public attention and support.

The “Toys for Tots” program’s core objective – to bring the joy of Christmas to America’s needy children – has remained steadfast since its inception. Esteemed personalities, including First Ladies Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush, have served as national spokespersons, further cementing the program’s significance. Every year, the spirit of Diane and Major Bill Hendricks’ generosity is rekindled through the collection and distribution of unwrapped toys, ensuring that the magic of Christmas reaches those who need it most.

The enduring partnership between local communities and military units underscores the importance of collective effort in making a difference. This month, our congregation partners with Major Chuck Kilbride and the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines reserve battalion – our local infantry battalion, nicknamed the “Empire Battalion.” As we celebrate the greatest gift we ever received – our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ – why not donate an unwrapped gift for a child? Toy collection boxes remain present in the church. We encourage you to deposit a gift as we observe “Christmas in July” this Sunday, July 28th, at 9:30 AM at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 36 East John Street, Lindenhurst. Embrace the Christmas spirit of giving and enjoy your favorite carols and lessons!

Blessings,
Pastor Marc
